What's New
1st JAGFOE Symposium Successfully Concluded
The inaugural Japan-Germany Frontiers of Engineering Symposium brought together 40 early career researchers in Tokyo for four days of cross-disciplinary exchange.
About the Program
Japan and Germany are key partners in science, technology and innovation. Recognizing this long-established relationship, the Japan-Germany Frontiers of Engineering Program (JAGFOE) was established to advance technological exchange and strengthen institutional ties between the two countries.
Aim of the Program
The Program provides opportunities for early and mid-career researchers in both countries — emerging leaders in the science and technology community — to organize and actively participate in a Japan-Germany Frontiers of Engineering Symposium. With a particular focus on cross-disciplinary themes in the field of cutting-edge engineering, the Program allows participants access to leading experts from the other country. By discussing cutting-edge technologies across different fields, participants gain intellectual inspiration and play an active role in generating ideas for new research and development, leading to possible joint research projects and seminars in the future.
Organization of the Symposium
In both Japan and Germany, one Co-chair and two Session Organizers are selected for the Symposium, taking account of diversity.
- Co-chairs oversee the planning and operation of the Symposium. Two themes and two Session Organizers (one for each theme) are selected based on consultations between the Japanese and German Co-chairs.
- Session Organizers formulate a plan for the session on the theme they are in charge of, select speakers, and create the session program. On the day of the Symposium, they serve as session chair and moderator.
- Speakers (two per session) give presentations and engage in discussions.
- General Participants consist of invited discussants who specialize in the selected themes, as well as those who do not specialize in the themes. They are expected to participate actively in discussions and poster sessions.
The Symposium
The Symposium brings together approximately 30 participants (15 from Japan and 15 from Germany) over two days at one venue. The program consists of presentations and brainstorming sessions organized around two cross-disciplinary themes. As part of the promotion of exchange among researchers, all participants — including Co-chairs and Session Organizers — exhibit posters of their research results and engage in dialogue, with a view to exploring further collaboration beyond the Symposium. The language of the Symposium is English.
Eligibility
Applicants must be early and mid-career researchers affiliated with a research organization (including the private sector) in Japan or Germany.
Organizers
The Program is jointly supported by the Engineering Academy of Japan (EAJ), acatech – National Academy of Science and Engineering, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH), the Volkswagen Foundation, and the DAAD Regional Office / German Centre for Research and Innovation (DWIH) Tokyo.
